What the Holland code is
Psychologist John Holland proposed that both people and jobs can be described by six interest themes. The closer your personal code matches a career's code, the more satisfied and stable you are likely to be. It is one of the most researched and practical career models available.
The six themes are usually remembered by the acronym RIASEC:
| Code | Theme | Likes | Example careers |
|---|---|---|---|
| R | Realistic | Hands-on, tools, nature | Mechanic, electrician, farmer |
| I | Investigative | Analysis, theory, discovery | Scientist, programmer, analyst |
| A | Artistic | Creativity, expression | Designer, writer, musician |
| S | Social | Helping, teaching, care | Teacher, nurse, counsellor |
| E | Enterprising | Leading, persuading, risk | Manager, sales, founder |
| C | Conventional | Order, detail, systems | Accountant, admin, operator |
Your three-letter code
Most people are not one pure type but a blend, usually expressed as a three-letter code like 'ISC' or 'AES'. The first letter is your dominant interest; the combination shows the flavour of work you will find most engaging. A person coded SEC enjoys structured helping roles; an AIR person loves open-ended technical-creative work.
Why it works better than 'follow your passion'
- It is specific โ it points at activities, not vague feelings.
- It is measurable โ interest inventories give a real code.
- It predicts fit โ matching codes predict satisfaction and retention.
- It complements personality โ style (MBTI) plus interest (Holland) is powerful.
How to use your code
Start with your top two letters and list jobs that score high on those themes. Then check the third. Finally, cross-reference with your MBTI type to see whether the day-to-day style suits you. A strong Investigative interest with an INTP style is a natural research fit; the same interest with an ESFJ style might pull toward science communication instead.
Pair interests with personality
Your MBTI type describes your style; your Holland code describes what you enjoy doing. Take both for a fuller picture.
Take the MBTI testFrequently asked questions
Is the Holland code scientifically valid?
It is one of the most extensively validated career-interest models, with decades of research linking code match to satisfaction and retention.
Can my code change?
Interests are fairly stable in adulthood but can shift with exposure and experience. Your code is a useful snapshot, not a life sentence.
How is it different from MBTI?
MBTI describes personality style and preferences; Holland describes vocational interests and preferred activities. They answer different questions and work well together.
Do I need all three letters to match a career?
No. Even your top one or two letters narrow the field usefully. The fuller the code, the sharper the match.
