An idea older than psychology

More than two thousand years ago, physicians described four 'humours' in the body and linked them to four temperaments. Though we long ago dropped the biology, the personality sketches survived because they captured something observably true about how people differ in energy and mood.

The four types

TemperamentCore flavourStrengthsWatch-outs
SanguineLively, socialFun, outgoing, optimisticEasily distracted, disorganized
CholericDriven, leaderlyDecisive, energetic, goal-focusedImpatient, domineering
MelancholicThoughtful, deepLoyal, detailed, creativeProne to moodiness, perfectionism
PhlegmaticCalm, steadyPeaceful, patient, good listenerPassive, avoids conflict

Why it still helps

The four temperaments are a simple, memorable way to notice someone's natural energy and pace. A choleric boss and a phlegmatic colleague will keep colliding unless both see the pattern. Like any model, it is a starting lens, not a label to weaponise.

Most people are a blend, often with one dominant and one secondary temperament. Pure single types are rare โ€” and more interesting for it.

Temperaments vs MBTI

The four temperaments map loosely onto energy and social style, while MBTI adds decision and information dimensions for finer detail. Many people enjoy reading both: the ancient sketch for a quick read, the modern type for the nuance.

Prefer a modern map?

The four temperaments are ancient; the MBTI test is a modern take on similar questions. Try both and compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is the humour theory real medicine?

No โ€” the biological 'humours' were disproven long ago. The temperament descriptions survive as a folk-psychology map of personality, not science.

Can I be two temperaments?

Most people blend two, with one dominant. A 'melancholic-phlegmatic' person is thoughtful yet calm, for example.

Which temperament is best?

None. Each brings strengths and blind spots; healthy teams need a mix of all four.

How does it relate to MBTI?

Loosely. Sanguine โ‰ˆ extraverted, choleric โ‰ˆ decisive/judging, melancholic โ‰ˆ thoughtful/feeling, phlegmatic โ‰ˆ calm/peace-seeking โ€” but the systems measure different things.
